NHS Digital is the national information and technology provider for the health and care system.  Our growing team of 2,700+ information analysis, technology and project management experts create, deliver and manage the crucial digital systems, services, products and standards upon which health and care professionals depend, working in partnership with both national and local organisations.

Our Senior Delivery Managers use their knowledge and experience in agile and lean practices to create the right environment for effective delivery. A Senior Delivery Manager will motivate their team to continually learn, improve and innovate, whilst providing coaching, guidance and practical advice.

What's involved top line:
  • Responsible for the delivery of designated products and services by multi-disciplinary user-centred or software delivery teams
  • Using your knowledge and experience in agile and lean practices to create the right environment for effective delivery
  • Responsible for ensuring that your delivery team is adopting and applying the most appropriate lean and agile techniques, utilising user-centred iterative design and development processes

We’re growing and are looking for Senior Delivery Managers to join a number of our directorates and have a range of roles which include:

Product Development designs and delivers new applications to help citizens, patients and clinicians including the NHS website, NHS App, NHS login and Digital Urgent and Emergency Care.

  • Senior DM for NHS App – Supporting 16 million users accessing healthcare services on their smartphone or tablet. Help us continue to inform people about their health and care, manage their health and access new digital healthcare tools.
  • Senior DMs for Screening – Delivering improved screening services across the NHS including bowel cancer and breast screening services.
  • Senior PMs for Primary Care Technology – Delivering better modern GP systems, using shared, open standards to help unlock the potential of digital technology across the NHS.

Data Services is the data custodian for the health and care system, has primary responsibility for driving data quality, linking data across the system and providing reliable statistics and insights.

  • Senior DMs for Data Services Alliance - Supporting delivery squads within the Alliance using agile delivery approaches - ensuring products are delivered on time, blockers are removed and teams remain focussed and motivated.

Platforms provides the core platforms that underpin the products and data services which we deliver within NHSD and are also made accessible to regional and local service developers including demographic registers, identity services (citizen identity and NHS workforce identity) and messaging platforms for prescriptions and referrals. 

  • Senior DM for Demographics – Supporting the transformation of our demographic platform by leading one or more multi-disciplinary agile delivery teams, optimising delivery flow and facilitating a user-centred approach.
  • Senior DM for Care Identity Service (CIS) – Leading one or more multi-disciplinary agile delivery teams within our identity and access management pillar, optimising delivery flow and facilitating a modern, user-centred platform approach to our product and services.
  • Senior DM for Clinicals – Leading one or more multi-disciplinary agile delivery teams within our clinical pillar, optimising delivery flow and facilitating a modern, user-centred platform approach to our product and services.

IT Operations Delivers world class IT systems, services operations and management to ensure performant, reliable and resilient digital capabilities for health and social care.

  • NHSmail Shared Tenant: Provides organisations with access to Exchange Online and Microsoft 365 product suite as a national service and provides frontline staff with secure collaboration services to enable them to be more effective when working across Health & Social Care settings. This role will be based within the Centre of Excellence Team and will report to the CoE Transformation Lead in charge of this function and manage the team working directly with organisations to develop the NHSmail Microsoft 365 offering meeting end user needs.

Assurance and Risk Management (ARM) provides assurance to our Board and key stakeholders that NHS Digital can successfully deliver on its objectives to be considered a trusted and valued business partner across health and social care.

  • Senior Delivery Manager ARM - Providing governance and controls for the delivery of business intelligence, management information and analysis used by senior stakeholders across the organisation.

As a Senior Delivery Manager you role will include:

  • Taking ownership of the delivery of designated products and services by multi-disciplinary user-centred or software delivery teams
  • Utilising your knowledge and experience in agile and lean practices to create the right environment for effective delivery
  • Motivating your team to continually learn, improve and innovate, whilst providing coaching, guidance and practical advice
  • Be responsible for ensuring that your delivery team are adopting and applying the most appropriate lean and agile techniques, using user-centred iterative design and development processes
  • Ensuring that team members are motivated, collaborating and working well. Identifying risks, issues, dependencies and other blockers to successful delivery, and helping the team to overcome them
  • Working closely with Product Managers, owning the planning and direction of your area of work, ensuring vision, objectives and outcomes of the team are clearly defined, well-articulated, and understood by all members of the team
  • Work closely with key external stakeholders such as the Department of Health & Social Care, NHS England, NHSX, Public Health England, and other Health and Social Care organisations. Managing and supporting all activities associated with research, user testing, deployments and implementations of products and services

About you

Some of the skills and experience we're looking for: 

  • Practitioner level knowledge and experience of Agile practices, tools, techniques and culture - specifically Scrum and Kanban
  • A thorough understanding of the importance and use of research and insight in informing work, developing and using research and insight to help separate 'wants' from 'needs' to inform service/product development work and wider business decision
  • Using clear, open and transparent frameworks with a delivery team (such as Kanban, Lean, Scrum, Scrumban, Feature driven development or Spotify agile) and blending them depending on the context
  • Experience of measuring, evaluating and visualisation outcomes
  • Using continuous mentoring approaches and experience of enabling a team to share skill sets
  • Using data to forecast and continually plan through sprints and delivery phases. Scheduling and sequencing activity to continually optimise flow and critical paths to delivery, setting appropriate milestones and review points
  • Experience managing a broad range of diverse stakeholders, understanding their needs, managing expectations and building consensus
