About the role

We provide expertise to enable national programmes and health and social care organisations to develop effective systems, information and technology. Our work contributes to safer treatment and better care within health and social care services in England.

This role will be part of Solution Assurance, contributing to Non-Functional test and assurance activities across NHS Digital portfolios. 

Following an extensive induction providing the opportunity to experience diverse areas of technical assurance, the postholder will provide test and assurance consultancy support working as an SME (Subject Matter Expert) with a range of delivery partners and suppliers.

As a Technical Assurance Specialist, you will be responsible for:

  • Using your specialist knowledge of Non-Functional (RFO and Performance) testing (including software and application interoperability in a large scale, multiple component delivery context) to support NHS Digital programme delivery.
  • Proactively develop collaborative relationships with suppliers, internal delivery teams and/or customers.

  • Understand and clearly articulate complex technical architectures (cloud / on premise), assess and mitigate the non-functional risks.

  • Using your knowledge of key concepts of agile development – (the agile lifecycle, the mechanics of scrums and sprints), to support the principles of continuous integration.

  • Using your knowledge of quality maturity models such as TMMI and quality standards such as the ISO9000 series to improve test capabilities.

  • Maintain knowledge of test tools and testing methodologies, providing detailed advice regarding their application for Non-Functional test execution throughout the software lifecycle.
  • Support Risk Assurance Workshops with a range of NHS Digital stakeholders and System suppliers.

About you

This role may appeal to anyone with experience in the test and assurance domain, including those working in technical roles in health informatics who would like a new challenge in test and assurance.  

Some of the key skills and experience you'll bring:  

  • Knowledge of quality maturity models such as TMMI and quality standards such as the ISO9000 series and risk models to improve test capabilities. 
  • Proven knowledge of a number of complex operating systems, technical (Cloud/hardware) and data architectures, and how they interact in terms of technical and business requirements.
  • Thorough working knowledge of agile testing and assurance processes and methods for non-functional test and assurance
  • Proven ability to apply structured test and assurance techniques and processes for complex IT systems and solutions.

  • Ability to clearly articulate a technical architecture and to recognise the risks associated with that solution.

  • Knowledge of non-functional testing including Volume and Performance, and Ready for Operations in a large scale, multiple component delivery context.
  • Proven ability to use structured test data and enable test environment provision to improve and aid non-functional testing.
  • Working knowledge of heath care informatics systems and the technology used, such as:

    - messaging and data exchange essentials such as HL7, HTTP, SOAP, XML, FHIR and JSON

    - secure Cloud services and integrated infrastructure

    - operating systems such as UNIX / Ubuntu LINUX / Windows

    - database technologies such as Postgres, Riak and Oracle

    - network architecture such as LAN/WAN/SAN

  • Qualified to Post-Graduate Diploma/Degree level, or equivalent higher education qualification or equivalent experience.
  • ISEB/ISTQB Software Testing Foundation Certificate (Certified or Agile Tester) or equivalent recognised qualification or level of experience
