About the role

NHS Digital is the national information and technology provider for the health and care system.  Our growing team of 2,700+ information analysis, technology and project management experts create, deliver and manage the crucial digital systems, services, products and standards upon which health and care professionals depend, working in partnership with both national and local organisations.

Our Lead Product Managers:

  • lead product direction across a portfolio of products or services, ensuring they meet user needs and deliver strategic outcomes
  • build an operating environment that supports product teams to continually deliver effectively
  • work with senior stakeholders to agree strategic priorities and respond to emerging needs

We’re growing and are looking for Lead Product Managers to join a number of our directorates and have a range of opportunities which include:

Product Development designs and delivers new applications to help citizens, patients and clinicians including the NHS website, NHS App, NHS login and Digital Urgent and Emergency Care.
  • Lead PM NHS Pathways – Leading the iteration and development of products that support non-clinical call handlers and clinicians in directing patients and carers to the most appropriate level of care.
  • Lead PM Patient Record Migration Leading the development of solutions to improve patient experiences, business processes and operating efficiency in the area of GP patient record movement between practices.

Data Services is the data custodian for the health and care system, has primary responsibility for driving data quality, linking data across the system and providing reliable statistics and insights.

  • Product Team Lead – Leading and managing the pool of PMs working across the directorate. Ensuring consistent working to best practice, alignment with the GDS and NHS Service Standards and with DDaT capabilities and approaches

  • Lead PM for Operating Model – Leading the design and implementation of our new directorate Operating Model within our Business and Operations function
  • Lead PM for Burden Reduction – Leading the creation and prioritisation of a backlog of work to reduce the burden of data collection on the health system within our Data Curation area
  • Lead PM for Data Processing – Leading the design and implementation of an improved data refining/processing platform this person within our Technology function
  • Lead PM for Cloud Data Platform - Leading work to deliver a new cloud data platform within the Data Services Alliance. Working collaboratively with users, delivery teams, service owners and other key stakeholders to understand, articulate and deliver the vision for the platform
  • Lead PM for Platform Improvement - Leading work to define and deliver a roadmap of continuous improvements for our legacy platforms and migration from these to other strategic solutions within the Data Services Alliance - enabling critical live services to meet the needs of our users and stakeholders.

Platforms provides the core platforms that underpin the products and data services which we deliver within NHSD and are also made accessible to regional and local service developers including demographic registers, identity services (citizen identity and NHS workforce identity) and messaging platforms for prescriptions and referrals.

  • Lead PM for Spine: Lead the design and implementation of an improved spine platform providing direction and clarity of outcomes so that work is effectively prioritised and delivered
  • Lead PM for EPS: Lead the design and implementation of an improved electronic prescribing and dispensing platform and clarity of outcomes so that work is effectively prioritised and delivered

More about the role

As a Lead Product Manager you will:

  • represent Product Management practice at a senior level within your business area, providing strong, decisive and visible product leadership
  • act as an initial point of escalation for key product decisions for your product portfolio, providing leadership, autonomy, support and direction
  • support Product Managers to ensure every product or service has a clear vision with objectives aligned to the real needs of users and the mission of the organisation
  • ensure teams have appropriate and relevant performance and success measures in place (e.g. Key Performance Indicators, Objectives & Key Results etc.)
  • work with programmes and the wider organisational leadership to ensure that product or service vision and goals are aligned
  • ensure that relevant key stakeholders and delivery partners are included, work with them is well coordinated and that new partnership opportunities are evaluated

About you

Some of the skills and experience we're looking for from our Lead Product Managers:

  • Experience of successfully delivering digital products or services through agile methodologies (e.g. Scrum, Kanban etc.) and user-centred design methods
  • Experience of using available evidence to drive critical or sensitive decision making on product direction
  • Understanding how product lifecycle stage and strategic objectives impact on delivery focus
  • Experience of assessing potential and evidenced user needs alongside strategic objectives and technical requirements
  • Experience of defining and communicating outcomes to be met by a product portfolio area and its services or teams
  • Experience communicating progress and ideas to diverse audience groups (including senior leaders or executives) and negotiating to overcome delivery constraints
  • Experience forming productive working relationships at all levels and within a complex management structure
