About the role

The use of technology in the NHS has been fast, intense, and exciting, especially in the last year.  NHS Digital has been at the forefront of these technology and data advances, and the commercial team is a critical component of this delivery.  

We are seeking a Commercial Specialist to join our team based in either our Leeds or London office. As part of our team, you will be at the forefront in delivering our ambition – working together to harness the power of the marketplace to deliver maximum value to our healthcare system.

You will join a team of commercial experts specialising in digital solutions and technology and will work with some of the biggest global and health technology suppliers, ensuring that we get best value out of the significant investments we make every year. You will have the opportunity to work on a full range of commercial matters, procurements, and contracts, from smaller specialised areas to some of the biggest and most complex technology deals in the NHS as well as shaping some of our strategic services.

In this role you will act as commercial advisor for high-profile programmes within NHS Digital, working predominantly with the Data Services Directorate. You will work closely with the business to help drive value for money decisions, develop commercial strategies and provide guidance and advice on a diverse range of commercial matters. This role will be responsible for helping create strategic solutions that deliver the best possible commercial outcomes for the directorate and have a beneficial commercial impact on the organisation.

The ideal candidate will have experience in the technology sector and working in a complex commercial environment. They will be expected to work towards gaining accreditation at the Government Commercial Function Assessment and Development Centre (ADC).

 

As a Commercial Specialist you will:

  • Work closely with senior stakeholders, acting as a trusted commercial advisor providing comprehensive commercial guidance to the business, drawing out key risks and compliance issues
  • Lead the delivery of complex and novel commercial projects and programmes, supporting the directorate in identifying and implementing strategies that deliver the most suitable outcomes

  • Take the lead on supplier relationship and contract management to deliver business outcomes whilst recognising the importance of suppliers’ commercial drivers/objectives

  • Manage the creation and implementation of contractual documentation to support the delivery of key services
  • Develop commercial understanding and competence across the Data Services Directorate

  • Help maintain and manage a pipeline of activity for the Data Services Directorate

  • Support commercial colleagues with delivering the overall team ambition and objectives

  • Deliver cashable savings and other financial/non-financial benefits

  • Represent NHS Digital to stakeholders within the NHS and Government, and hold key NHS Digital relationships with key suppliers

  • Provide mentoring and guidance to junior members of the team

About you

 Some of the key skills and experience you'll bring to the role:  
 
  • Relevant experience working in the technology sector
  • Breadth of experience in commercial roles encompassing the commercial lifecycle end-to-end
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly establish relationships
  • Ability to engage with and manage multiple stakeholders at all levels, influencing and challenging decision making
  • Knowledge of contract law and ability to negotiate, draft, analyse and assure complex agreements
  • Experience of working as an expert or lead role in undertaking strategic procurement exercises to improve value for money
  • Able to thrive in a dynamic and intense organisation, comfortable with ambiguity and change
  • Ability to manage conflict effectively and appropriately at all levels to ensure objectives are achieved
  • Knowledge of appropriate Public Procurement Regulations
  • MCIPS or equivalent professional qualification and / or evidence of equivalent level of experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
