About The Role

This varied and interesting role offers the opportunity to be part of a dynamic team in a fast-paced environment, working directly with national and trade media.

As a Media Officer at NHS Digital you will have an opportunity to express your creativity and deliver meaningful and impactful communications campaigns to show how the NHS is using data and technology to improve lives

Working with the wider media team you will be responsible for promoting the important work we do through high quality media relations and via our social media channels, and provide support around reputation management, including providing advice to senior stakeholders and crisis communications.

Working within a supportive team you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and to explore a range of communications opportunities.

This role could be based in either Leeds or London depending on the successful candidates preference.

As a Media Officer you will be responsible for:

  • Building relationships with journalists including effective briefing and pitching stories.
  • Proactively managing media and social media activity for designated technology and statistical areas.
  • Acting as the first point of contact for media enquiries and responses.
  • Developing and implementing media plans/campaigns.
  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to create compelling content, including news releases, editorial features and social media content.
  • Producing high quality planned materials including press releases, interview briefs, social media collateral and placed editorials.
  • Providing out-of-hours cover on a shift pattern basis (additional payment available).

About You

Some of the key skills and experience you'll bring:  

  • Understanding and practical experience of journalism or media relations.
  • Experience of working with journalists in a multi-channel environment such as a communications team or newsroom, with exposure to and involvement in the creation of campaigns.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills: able to provide clear communications materials and fluently adapt style and tone for different audiences/output.
  • Good news sense, ability to make effective decisions and awareness of political and operational considerations and sensitivities.


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
  • Active membership of a professional communications, marketing or PR body (desirable.)
